Brownstown Middle School's National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is rallying the school community for an upcoming Read-A-Thon on November 15, inviting all students to participate and raise funds for families in need this holiday season.
Cheryl Noble, the NJHS advisor, highlighted the event’s impact on both students and the community. “When we discovered that reading can reduce stress by up to 68%, making it even more effective than other stress-relief activities like listening to music or taking a walk, it really resonated with us,” Noble shared, citing a study by the University of Sussex. “This reinforces our commitment to supporting students academically and socially-emotionally. When the idea was presented at the October NJHS meeting, the students wholeheartedly supported it, as it aligns with NJHS’s core pillars of citizenship and service.”
NJHS members will use all funds raised to purchase essential items like coats, clothing, and holiday gifts for local families in need, reinforcing a sense of community and compassion. If successful, the Read-A-Thon could become an annual tradition, spreading support and cheer to those who need it most.
How the Read-A-Thon Works:
Participation: For a $5 donation, students will receive a snack pass, which includes a small Gatorade, a bag of chips, and a full-size candy bar. All snacks will be nut-free, and alternative candy options will be available upon request for those with milk allergies.
Schoolwide Goal: If students raise $2,500, each participating student will receive an additional full-size candy treat. A tracker in the school’s front office window will keep everyone updated on fundraising progress.
On Read-A-Thon Day: Students will go through their regular class schedule, enjoying time to read with friends or listening to teachers share favorite stories, creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone.
Donations are being accepted now. This Read-A-Thon promises to be a memorable day for the school. Along with the joy of reading, students and teachers will experience a positive impact on their mental well-being - all while supporting the Brownstown community.
