We love summer because it means warmer weather and more free time to have fun! When taking a break from the sun, or as a part of a morning or evening routine, we recommend integrating reading! Reading for just 30 minutes each day will help students stay on track and be ready to hit the ground running when the school year begins in September.

Students in the Kinder Lit Lab at Wegienka Elementary made binoculars and went outside to explore nature last week. Students are loving all the fun activities and learning with Mrs. Kosztowny. Kinder Lit Labs are being held at each of the WBSD's five elementary schools this summer. The program is designed to help incoming kindergarten students get excited about school, routines and familiarize them with the classroom setting.

Today is Independence Day! As the United States’ official birthday, we know many of our community members will be celebrating. Whether going to a firework show or a local parade, we hope you have fun and stay safe.

This check in, and all of our check ins will be held at the Woodhaven Civic Center Park Pavilion located at 23977 Hall Road, Woodhaven. This event will feature the Metropark Mobile Program featuring Cold Blooded Creatures. We hope to see you there!

WBSD is excited to partner with Varsity Tutors for Schools to bring our students enrichment opportunities over the summer. Students can login through Clever https://clever.com/in/wbsd and click the Varsity Tutors icon to access summer enrichment opportunities and classes. Every week we will highlight new opportunities for elementary, middle and high school students. While you’re in the application, feel free to search and see what interests your students the most! First up, let’s get right to it! Roblox Coding Camp is the top pick for this week for both elementary and middle school students. Check out Codeverse to begin your coding journey! High school students might want to consider the Secrets of SAT Reading & Writing Class. These classes are free for WBSD students to learn what interests them this summer!

Planning a Vacation or Staycation this summer? Both are a great opportunity to slip in some fun lessons without your students even knowing! Vacation - make vacation a lesson! Involve students in the packing and preparation process like making a list of things they’ll need. Encourage students to keep a journal about their experiences. They can compare and contrast things when they arrive at their destination. Staycation - backyard camping helps with teaching outdoor skills. Building a “camp” or picnic indoors is an opportunity for students to help out, make lists, and discuss things you will need for your adventure. Plan a trip to the park and talk about observations while you’re at the park. Park playdates are an opportunity to help children connect with others and work on their social skills and socialization.

Finding equally fun and educational activities for children in the summer can be a challenge! The Detroit Zoo and Toledo Zoo make it easy. The fun of a trip to the zoo is seeing animals from across the globe and getting to learn about them. As we celebrate summer, we want to remind our district families of the services available while school is not in session over summer. Elementary students are encouraged to spending time working on the activities in their Think Stretch workbooks and come to the check ins! Unified Fitness Camp, August 19th and 20th for 7th through 12th grade students

Woodhaven High School hosted the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition of the season - Crescendo - which started out in favor of the Good Squad Team 3604. The local district event was held on March 9 and 10 at Woodhaven High School with over 40 teams from around the area competing in the challenge, Crescendo. The Good Squad took first place in the district competition. On the first day of competition, the team earned eight wins and one loss. At the end of Day 2, the team ended the qualifying matches still in first place with 10 wins and two losses. In the quarter finals, the Goon Squad lost the first match in a tie breaker and then came back to win the next three matches which was the push the team needed to land them a place in the finals. During the finals, the team won the first match, lost the second and won the final match for an overall first place title. Additionally, the team won the FIRST Impact Award (formerly known as the Chairman’s Award), which is the most prestigious award at FIRST®. The award honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST®. It was created to keep the central focus of FIRST® Robotics Competition on the ultimate goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become science and technology leaders. The Goon Squad is comprised of 32 students, and the advisors are Rebecca Matzo and Nick Matzo.

Young Fives and Kindergarten students at Gudith Elementary recently had a special guest reader, Officer Bob McNamara from the Brownstown Police Department. Officer McNamara is one of the three School Resource Officers in the WBSD.
